Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u Biography Age, Education, Career, and Family

Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u is the Cabinet Secretary, of National Treasury & Economic Planning. He was appointed Cabinet Secretary by President William Samoei Ruto on September 27, 2022.

Prior to the current appointment, Prof. Ndung’u was serving as the Executive Director of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), a Pan-African premier capacity-building network of researchers, trainers, students, universities, policymakers, and international resource persons.

He is an associate professor of economics at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and the immediate former Governor, Central Bank of Kenya.

Professor Njuguna is an economist, researcher, and university lecturer in Kenya. He served as the eighth Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya between 2007 and 2015. Njuguna currently serves as the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Planning.

Early Life

Prof Njuguna Ndungu was Born: 1960 -age 63 years, in Lodwar, Turkana County.

Education

Njuguna studied Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of Nairobi and a Master of Arts from the same university. He later pursued a Ph.D. degree from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Career

Njuguna has a longstanding career in research, teaching, and management. He started as a University lecturer after completing his PhD education before joining the African Economic Research Consortium where he acted as the director of training.

He also lectured in advanced economic theory and econometrics at the University of Nairobi, where he was an associate professor of economics.

Prof Njuguna Ndung’u also served as a regional program specialist for the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office, Nairobi for the International Development Research Centre, Canada.

Njuguna Ndung’u has had extensive research and teaching work in various fields of economics, including macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and poverty reduction. As a long-time researcher and trainer with the AERC and MEFMI network, he has published in international journals as well as chapters in various books on economic policy issues, inflation, interest rate and exchange rate issues, financial management, public sector growth, external debt, financial liberalization in Anglophone Africa, structural adjustment, as well as on employment and labor market issues.

Prof Ndunng’u was appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank in 2007, a position he served until 2015.

In 2018, Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u became the executive director of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC).

Family

Professor Njuguna Ndung’u does not often speak about his family. However, he is married to one wife and has three children: Stephen Ndung’u, Ian Ndung’u, and Brenda Ndung’u.
