How COVID-19 made Locals Fear to Rescue a Survivor from a Crashed KDF Chopper

Crashed KDF Chopper

The Kenya defense suffered a loss on Monday morning July 13,2020 after one of their helicopters crashed in Kithyoko, Machakos county. The chopper is among the other six that were acquired from the US in January.

Residents saw the KDF Chopper crash but feared to rescue the survivor for fear of COVID-19 infection. One of the eyewitnesses Ann Kaluki told the Nation that she was busy on her farm as she saw a KDF chopper flying too low as if it is going to crash. She told one of her friends that the plane seemed to crash on them hence they ran away.

The chopper is said to hang on one of the trees, then fell as huge dust came up as it crashed. One of the pilots was still alive as residents reached the scene, but he did not get help. Speculation of coronavirus generated fear among the residents and they hesitated to help the pilot.

Reports by the Machakos County commander have it that the subchief of Kithyoko sub-location, Mr. Daniel muthoka, reported the incident. According to Mr. Muthoka, the chopper had two senior military officers of the rank of Major.

The Kenya army responded immediately and evacuated the bodies. KDF in a statement yesterday said that this was a training flight and onboard were two pilots who have then been evacuated from the crash site.
