On Saturday, Kenyans were treated to some news of hope, after Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Rashid Aman, during his daily COVID-19 presser, announced that a total of COVID-19 recovered patients had risen to 464 in the country after 26 more were discharged.
Among those who were announced to have fully recovered and discharged from hospital, was Bishop Margaret Wanjiru who was admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi nearly 10 days ago after falling ill.
The former Starehe MP was later confirmed COVID-19 positive after being admitted to the hospital, with reports indicating that she was immediately rushed to ICU after developing breathing complications.
But ten days later after admission, Jesus Is Alive Ministries founder has been pronounced COVID-19 free, probably beating the record of the fasted recovered patient in the country.
Addressing reporters outside Aga Khan Hospital, the jovial Bishop Wanjiru, who looked so healthy, confirmed that in deed two of her grandchildren and six staff members had also contracted the disease and were still recovering in hospital.
The former lawmaker revealed that she was taken to hospital not knowing she had contracted the virus. She stated that she initially did not have coronavirus symptoms but had diarrhea and food poisoning, only to be confirmed with COVID-19 upon testing.
“I owe my healing to God. I am over 50 years and never been hospitalized before. I had food poisoning on a Sunday. When I went to the hospital, I did not go for COVID-19, didn’t sneeze, or cough but I have walked out of this hospital COVID-19 free. My two grandchildren and six staff members were also positive for coronavirus,” she stated.
But even as many celebrate the full recovery of the Bishop, many Kenyans online have expressed their shock and dissatisfaction over the short period of time Wanjiru took to recover. While comparing the number of days admitted to hospital with those of other recovered victims, many read some mischief with others putting her recovery into question.
This is not the first time Kenyans are questioning the country’s COVID-19 recovered patients. Shortly after the government confirmed the recovery details of Kenya’s first coronavirus two victims, many took issues with the government with some accusing it of lying to its citizens.
“Am I the only one who is confused here? From testing to hospitalization to ICU to recovery, discharge, and press conference in 8 days? Isn’t one supposed to be held and re-tested to confirm recovery?? Anyway. Let me mind my own. #Sanitise” posed one user on Facebook.
Here are some more reactions from Kenyans both on Facebook and Twitter, who questioned Bishop Wanjiru’s record recovery;
Jakanyala Wilson Okombo How does one come from ICU to cameras direct with alot of energy like this of a bishop,? Wacheni bishop aitwe bishop with an instant healing.Anyway Amen for you have a tale to tell
Mouna Abdalah I’m wondering the same. Meaning she was intubated. Patients who were intubated don’t have this much energy
Jakanyala Wilson Okombo Jasper Ageri doesn’t joke with covid19, the struggle this people go through isn’t a joke. You can’t come out of it when admitted with this kind of energy, this is an Afrocinema,
