Your health is your best asset, and your diet can have a huge impact on it. You probably have a general idea of which foods you should be eating—vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish—but what about which ones to avoid? Here’s a list of 12 potentially cancer-causing food.
They are rich in salt and saturated fat, which is not good for the human body. They are also rich in acrylamide, a carcinogenic chemical that occurs in food that is cooked at a high temperature and increases the risk of cancer.
This chemical is also found in cigarettes, which makes them dangerous too.
At one time, margarine was hailed as a healthy alternative to butter, but new research has discovered that organic, grass-fed butter is actually far better for you.
Margarine is full of trans fats and is heavily processed from oils like soy and corn. The process exposes the oil to high temperatures, which causes a rise in dangerous free radicals.
Most processed meat products, including lunch meats, bacon, sausage, and hot dogs, contain chemical preservatives that make them appear fresh and appealing, but that can also cause cancer.
Both sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate have been linked to significantly increase the risk of colon and other forms of cancer, so be sure to choose only uncured meat products made without nitrates, and preferably from grass-fed sources.
4. Soda pop
Like processed meats, soda pop has been shown to cause cancer as well. Loaded with sugar, food chemicals, and colorings, soda pop acidifies the body and literally feeds cancer cells.
Common soda pop chemicals like caramel color and its derivative 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) have also specifically been linked to causing cancer.
5. Microwave popcorn
Sure it’s easy to pop a bag of popcorn in the microwave when you want a quick and tasty snack, but is it really worth risking yourself for liver, testicular and pancreatic cancer?
The microwave popcorn bags you have in your cabinet are lined with carcinogenic chemicals AND so is a chemical in the popcorn itself, which creates the artificial butter flavor.
If you can’t give up your favorite movie-time snack, it’s time to switch to the old-fashioned stovetop or a kernel popping machine like you see at movie theaters.
6. White flour
We all know that whole grains are good, if someone says that processed grains are good, be aware, they are misguiding you. The processed form of grain, for instance, refined white flour is cancerous in nature.
During the processing, the white color comes from a blast of chlorine gas. Besides this, it has an extremely high glycemic index, which spikes the blood glucose and insulin levels along with it.
7. Canned tomatoes
Fresh tomatoes are very good for health as they contain many nutrients, including cancer-fighting lycopene. However, once they are canned, they are exposed to BPA, which leaches from the can because of the high acidity level of tomatoes.
This chemical has been linked to cancer, but also to heart disease and reproductive issues.
8. Conventional apples, grapes, and other ‘dirty fruits
Many people think they are eating healthy when they buy apples, grapes, or strawberries from the store. But unless these fruits are organic or verified to be pesticide-free, they could be a major cancer risk.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that up to 98 percent of all conventional produce, and particularly the type found on its “dirty” fruits list, is contaminated with cancer-causing pesticides.
9. Hydrogenated oils
Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils, which cannot be naturally extracted like olive oil, soy, or canola oil, they must be chemically removed. They are commonly used in many foods in your pantry to preserve and keep their shelf life, yet they are also linked to cancer, birth defects, heart disease, and many other fatalities.
NEVER cook with hydrogenated oils and check your labels for healthy oils like olive, soy and canola instead.
10. Refined sugars
Cancer cells LOVE refined sugars, which spike insulin levels and promote cancer growth. High-fructose corn syrup is considered the worst offender and it’s found in any sweet you can think of.
It’s been known for a long time that cancer cells feed off of sugar, so with so many people addicted to sugary treats, it’s no wonder why cancer rates have skyrocketed.
11. Excessive amounts of alcohol
Occasional or social drinking is, sometimes, inevitable, especially during the holiday season. Regular and excessive drinking, however, can increase cancer risk because of the chemical compound acetaldehyde which the body produces when metabolizing alcohol.
This compound can damage the DNA and lead to the growth of cancer cells.
12. Farmed salmon
You think you may be saving money by buying the cheaper farmed salmon but apparently, you may also be putting your health at risk.
One study found that farmed salmon has 16 times more polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) compared to wild-caught salmon. PCBs are “chlorinated organic chemicals” used as a coolant and lubricant in electrical equipment.
They are proven carcinogens among animals and probable carcinogens in humans.
