Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir attributes his political success to Hon. Raila Odinga, who has held his hand since day one. The accomplished politician gained the public eye with how he chaired the committee that was investigating KEMSA scandals with his unique way of asking questions.

The two-time member of parliament declared his bid to run for the gubernatorial seat on an ODM party ticket back in 2021. Having declared his bid he faced tough competition from former senator Hassan Omar who was running on a UDA ticket.

The veteran politician hails from a family of politicians, his father is the late Shariff Nassir, a popular politician and a die-hard supporter of KANU. His father was known for his firm declaration of Moi’s leadership, Moi will continue to rule “Mpende Msipende.”

Away from politics, he is also a chief executive officer of Radio Rahma, a popular station in the coastal region.

The busy man is the son of the late Shariff Nassir, a popular politician who was too close to the late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. The tall handsome politician is off the market with a lovely wife, three boys, and a daughter.

 Education Background.

He started his schooling in 1981 at the Aga Khan primary school, he later moved to coast Academy where he sat for his KCPE in 1988. After primary level, he proceeded to Lenana High school in 1989 and left the school in 1992 after completing his KCSE. In 1993, he enrolled in a diploma course in aviation, in Nairobi before joining the business.

Career

Nassir stood on the political podium for the first time in 2013, vying for the position of Member of the parliament of the Mvita constituency. The intelligent politician managed to secure the seat with his first shot on an ODM ticket.

Nassir took over from the current cabinet secretary of tourism Najib Balala who had cemented his name in the political arena in the same position. Having made his way to the 11th parliament the vocal member of parliament was appointed as the committee member in charge of the different committees, including Finance, Planning, and Trade, and Assembly Public Investment.

He has also focused on trying to engage with the parents urging them to take their kids to school for a better tomorrow.

In 2014, he became emotional and found himself weeping in public while addressing the state of security in his constituency. In his speech during a bursary presentation for colleges and Universities, he wept explaining how security in his homestead has raised eye blows, citing out the case of the Mpeketoni killings and others.

In 2016, he fell on the wrong side of the government leading to the withdrawal of his security personnel and he was also instructed to return his gun. However, he responded by saying he doesn’t have a gun and he has never owned one. According to him, it was government intimidation following Malindi’s by-election.

After ten years of tenure, Shariff has now expressed his wish to represent the people of Mombasa as a whole in a gubernatorial position.

Serving as Governor

After serving as a member of parliament representing the people of Mvita, Nassir eventually decided to serve Mombasa as a whole.

Following a tough competition from the UDA side, Nassir had a talk with Suleiman who had also dominated the region and was also eying the ODM ticket and the two decide to join hands giving Nassir a good space to thrash his opponent.

On 29th August 2022, the people of Mombasa went to the ballot to complete their democratic right after their gubernatorial elections were postponed from 9th to 29th.

After coming out in large numbers they ensured Nassir ascended to power as their second governor, succeeding Hassan Joho who has served that region for two terms.

His current physique is a result of hard work and commitment to training. He was born big and he has been overweight since his childhood, which always lowered his self-esteem since he could not do most things his friends were doing.

It got to a point he could enter numerous cloth stores but could not find a fitting cloth. As a result, his wife and children motivated him to start a weight loss journey.

The journey to gaining his fit body was not easy as he had to change his diet and hit the gym as hard as he can in order to burn calories. After a long period of hard work, Nassir can comfortably wear anything that he likes and he can find it in any store.
