On Thursday, May 15, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially unveiled a new political formation — the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) — and kickstarted a national registration drive for new members.
According to the party’s interim Deputy Party Leader, Cleophas Malala, Kenyans can conveniently join Democracy for Citizens Party using their mobile phones via a simple USSD code.
How to Join DCP if You’re Already in Another Party
If you’re currently affiliated with another political party and wish to join DCP, you’ll need to resign from your existing party first. Here’s the step-by-step process:
- *Dial 509# on your phone.
- Enter your Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) PIN.
- From the main menu, choose:
- Option 1: Membership
- Then, Option 3: Resign from a party
- Follow the prompts to complete the resignation process.
Once you’ve successfully resigned:
- Dial *509# again.
- Enter your ORPP PIN.
- Select Membership.
- Choose to join a party.
- Enter the party name: DCP.
- Enter the party code: 829.
- Confirm your registration details.
How to Join DCP If You’ve Never Registered With Any Political Party
For first-time political party registrants:
- Dial *509# and register for the USSD service.
- Provide your ID number and first name when prompted.
- Confirm your details, after which a PIN will be sent to your phone.
Then:
- Dial *509# again.
- Enter your ORPP PIN.
- Choose Membership from the menu.
- Select Join a party.
- Enter the party name: DCP.
- Enter the party code: 829.
- Confirm your registration.

lso, Gachagua disclosed that the party will have various structures with the aim of bringing order and stability to the party. The party will have a National Delegates Council, National Governance Council, National Executive Council, National Management Council, and the National Executive Board.
It will also encompass national leadership councils for Governors, Senators, Members of the National Assembly, the Senate, Eminent Persons, Diaspora, Youth, Religious, Women and Students.
Gachagua revealed that a launch ceremony that will be open to the general public will happen on Wednesday, June 4, but did not disclose the venue.
