Process To Acquire The New digital Number Plate In Kenya

All car owners in Kenya are eligible to get the new digital number plate which they are going to replace the old ones.

As of now, it is a requirement for all motorists in Kenya to ensure that they are driving on the new digital number plates.

The new digital number plate has new, improved, and digitalized features, such as the new plates now have security features, which allow law enforcement agencies to track vehicles.

The feature is basically a microchip, which can be read by security agencies remotely.

They also have a completely new font and design, which are included with a QR code, the Kenyan flag, and NTSA serial number.

The new plates will be put on all imported vehicles at their point of entry. The same exercise will also see direct synchronization with the tax agency KRA.

This, it is said, will help the agency track tax evaders, including businesses that sell vehicles in the country.

As of today, there are around 5.2 million cars in Kenya and all have a limited time to acquire the latest Kenyan number plate.

It should also be known that the new plates will also serve 12 categories of vehicles.

How to Apply for a New generation Number Plate

Motorists will need to acquire an application form from the NTSA. The form should detail vehicle particulars, including the type of plates needed.

The easier way is via a TIMS account.

It can be accessed from tims.go.ke. Login into your account, and go to Apply reflective number plate.

Then choose a vehicle that needs the new plate (there is a list in case you have more than one vehicle).

After indicating the plate type and the person who will pick them, then indicate where you will want to collect the plate from.

Then, you will be tasked to make a payment via mobile money (M-PESA, Airtel Money) or card.

Lastly, you will receive a text from NTSA alerting you when your new plate will be ready.

An application fee will then be levied (KES 3000).

You will also be required to pay KES 700 for the replacement of a third license.

A fee of KES 1500 will be paid for the replacement of the motorcycle or single plate registration.

If you want a preferred registration number, then you must pay KES 30,000.

Cost to Acquire

It will cost you Ksh. 3,000 to get the new digital number plate for your car and replace the old number plate with the latest one in Kenya.

Kenyans or vehicle owners in the country have a limit of 18 months to switch their current plates to new ones.
