Teachers’ employer Teachers Services Commission is mandated by the constitution as enshrined in article 237(2) to register, recruit, promote and exercise disciplinary control over teachers besides advising the government on teaching matters among other functions.
The commission is run by 9 Commissioners who are supposed to serve for a non-renewable term of 6 years. The commission secretary only serves for 5 years which can be renewed upon satisfactory performance.
Now the basic qualification for being a commissioner is a bachelor’s degree from a recognized University. Any other higher qualification is an added advantage. Below are the qualifications of TSC’s top honchos starting with the most Educated.
Qualification of a TSC Commissioner
For one to be appointed the Commission Chair, such an individual should meet following minimum qualifications:
- holds a degree in education from a university recognized in Kenya;
- has knowledge and experience of at least fifteen years in matters relating to education and training; and
- meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
And for members top the Commission, here are the minimum requirements:
- holds a degree from a university recognized in Kenya;
- has knowledge and experience of at least ten years in matters relating to any of the following fields: education; governance; management; or the law; and
- meets the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution. In appointing members of the Commission, the President shall ensure that at least two-thirds of the members have experience in education.

She holds a Ph.D. in Educational psychology from Kenyatta University, a Masters in counseling psychology from United States International University, a Bachelor of Arts, and diploma in education from Nairobi University.

He holds a Masters of Science degree in education from Leeds University UK, a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Nairobi University, a Diploma in educational studies from Leeds University, and another Diploma in special education from the county of Copenhagen Denmark.

Ekirapa holds a Masters’s degree in education administration from Nairobi University and a Bachelor of Education degree from Kenyatta University. A former principal.

Njuguna holds a bachelor of law degree from the University of Nairobi and two postgraduate degrees-MA in international Business law and an MA in Agricultural development- all from the University of London.

5 Dr. Nancy Macharia. Secretary to the Commission.
Macharia holds a Masters’s degree in education (policy and management) from Bristol University UK, Bachelor of Education arts English/ literature from Kenyatta University. She has also trained both locally and internationally on corporate governance, public procurement, proactive management, information and communication technology, and policy formation. She is not a commissioner though.
