  • The University was born after the merging of Maseno Government Training Institute (GTI) with Siriba Teacher’s Training College to form one learning institution which was named Maseno University College.

  • Strathmore University has its beginnings in 1962 when it was founded as an Advanced-level Sixth Form College.
  • When it began, it only offered studies in Science and Arts subjects
  • But 4 years later in 1966, the university welcomed its first group of 25 Accountancy students who were sponsored by Shell East Africa, BAT (East Africa), and the East African Breweries.
  • In October 1982, owing to the increased demand from companies for the professional training of their employees, the College began evening courses in Accountancy after normal working hours, with 60 students sponsored by various companies.
  • In 1986, Strathmore College received a donation of  5 acres of land from the Kenyan government for its expansion.
  • They late started offering computer courses in 1991 after the establishment of the Information Technology Centre in the Lavington Campus. This gave birth to the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (formerly Institute of Data Processing Management)
  • In January 1992 a Distance Learning Centre was opened to offer correspondence courses in Accountancy to students who were not in a position to attend on-campus studies.
  • Later in 1993, the Strathmore College was merged with Kianda College to form one institution.
  • In 2007 it was awarded a charter by the Commission for Higher Education and began operating as a fully-fledged university.

8. Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology

  •  When it was founded it was named  western College of Arts and Applied Sciences. 
  •  The university was founded under the  stewardship of the then member of Parliament Hon. Masinde Muliro. 
  •  MMUST was founded  to cater for the Educational Needs of the people of the former Western province.   This would also help students to be self-reliant and create a new group of quality graduates for the job market.
  •  On March 1977, the first group of 24 students joined the university for certificate and Diploma courses.
  •  Initial  courses included mechanical and motor vehicle engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, Building and construction, accounting, finance and so on.
  •  Later in 2002 Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences was renamed Western University College of Science and Technology.  This new college became a constituent college of Moi university
  •  In 2007 the university received a Charter and was officially named Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
