ODM politician Steve Mbogo has promised to donate Ksh 1 Billion for the BBI agenda to move forward. Mbogo was speaking at an event in Nairobi where he marshaled Nairobi youths from 17 constituencies to rally behind the report. His donation comes at a time when his party leader Raila Odinga is involved in a war of words with IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati.
Raila Odinga is incessant that the 2021 referendum could cost the nation only Ksh 2 Billion. Raila argued that it was insincere for the IEBC commissioners to recommend high amounts for an exercise that would cost less.
“I am ready to give 1 billion shillings for the BBI agenda to move forward, I have the money” – Steve Mbogo
Wafula Chebukati and his fellow commissioners had projected Ksh 14 Billion as the cost for running the upcoming referendum. They stated that the amount would ensure that all 19 Million registered voters exercise their rights.
Chebukati shot down Raila’s argument, claiming that even the 2005 referendum was done at a cost of Ksh 10 Billion. Deputy President William Ruto has also taken a swipe at Raila during a visit to Muranga county.
Speaking in Kangema, Ruto said that Raila is not an election professional and has no capacity to propose the amounts to be used for a referendum. Ruto backed Chebukati’s estimated amounts while criticizing the BBI process for being a burden to the ordinary Kenyan.
