Wazito FC CEO Dennis Gicheru has called upon Kenyan football clubs to find ways of assisting the needy during the coronavirus period.

He spoke on Wednesday during a function at which he led a number of playing and non-playing staff of the Kenyan Premier League side to donate foodstuffs and sanitization items to seven children homes in Nairobi.

“I urge other Well-wishers to show empathy to the needy during this difficult period, be a brother’s keeper,” said Gicheru.

He pointed out that the program, which is dubbed the Wazito FC Project, is part of the team’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“We have a corporate social responsibility that goes beyond playing football in the stadia. We want to impact lives and make society a better place to live in, we will definitely do more to impact lives for our people.”

During the exercise, Gicheru led the team to homes in Mathare, Embakasi, Lang’ata, Ruiru, Kangemi, Valley Road, and Kasarani.

“The children were shown how to wash their hands properly as a way of protecting themselves from the deadly Coronavirus, they also received pep talks from our players and staff,” says a source at the club.

Gicheru said that children’s homes could have easily been forgotten as the country shifted all it’s focus on fighting the coronavirus pandemic, adding that people should stand with the vulnerable and the less fortunate in the community during this difficult period.

“As a club, we decided to stand with one of the vulnerable groups in society. During such times, children in orphanages and children’s homes tend to be forgotten and after consultations, we made a decision to help make the situation better for them during this period by donating foodstuffs and other sanitization products, equipment among other things.”

He appealed to the country at large to follow guidelines put in place in order to contain the virus.

“I urge everyone to exercise discipline, sanitize keep a social distance. They should not endanger their lives in any way, together we shall defeat Coronavirus.”
