News emerging from State House indicates that President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed a new Chief of Defence Forces.
According to the new changes, Uhuru appointed Gen. Robert Kibochi as the CDF designate. He replaces General Samson Mwathethe whose term has expired.
Meanwhile, the president also appointed Gen. Levi Mghalu as the Vice Chief of Defence Forces designate and Maj. Gen. Jimson Mutai is the Commander of the Kenya Navy designate.
The new appointees will assume office on May 11, 2020.
The President made the communication on Thursday evening while addressing the nation from State House.
General Mwathethe was meant to retire in 2019 but his term was extended by the president for one year.
Months before the retirement, special interest arose as around four people were mentioned as his potential replacements in the powerful position.
Under the KDF Act, the CDF serves a single four-year term or goes home upon reaching his retirement age of 62 years, or whichever comes first.
