Kenya is set to have a new Chief of Defence Forces following the expiry of tenure of general Samson Mwathethe whose term has expired.
President Uhuru Kenyatta the Commander in Chief of Kenya Defence Forces promoted Vice Chief of Defence Forces General Kariuki Kibochi to take over from Mwathethe on Thursday, April 30.
Mwathethe served at the help from April 2015, but Kibochi, his immediate deputy was promoted to deputise the CDF in July 2018.
Kariuki Kibochi was born in Nakuru county in August 15, 1959.
General Kariuki Kibochi was enlisted to the Kenya Defence Forces then Kenya Army in May 1979 a year after Mwathethe.
Following his enlisting, Kibochi underwent Cadets Training until March 1980.
After this training, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and posted to Signals Battalion.
The incoming military boss has been an excellent officer who held several staff and command appointments.
Before his elevation in 2018, Kariuki Kibochi was Commander of the Kenya Army, before which he was the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine, and Training at Defence Headquarters (DHQ).
Kibochi was also served as the Chief of Strategic Plans and Policy, Director International Peace Support Training Centre, Colonel Operations Requirements (CIS) and Commander Corps of Signals in a descending order.
Besides these positions the new CDF was Chief of Staff at the Eastern Africa Standby Force, SO1 Records at Headquarter Kenya Army (HQ KA), SO1 Communications Headquarters Kenya Army, SO1 Mobilization DHQ, SO1 Communications CIS DHQ and SOII Operations and Training at the HQ of the Corps of Signals.
In undergraduate, the incoming military boss pursued a Bachelors’s Degree in Technology in Communication and Electronics Engineering.
By virtue of academic excellence, Kibochi is presently a PhD candidate studying Peace and Conflict Management.
He pursued an Army Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom, Overseas Telecommunications Engineering Course in the UK also.
In training courses, he also earned a Signal Officers Telecommunications Engineering Degree in India alongside Sub-Unit Commanders Course, Regimental Signal Officers Course and Platoon Commanders Course.
Under the United Nations, Kibochi served as Commander of Kenyan Contingent in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) between 2000 and 2001.
He boasts of awards like: Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH) and Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), just to mention few known.
Kibochi is married to Tabitha and together have four daughters and grandchildren.
