Nandi Elders Hands Royal Rungu To William Ruto After 44 Years Under Daniel Moi’s Possession

History has repeated itself in Kalenjin land after 44 years.

Deputy President Dr. William Ruto has been entrusted with The Key symbol of leadership in the community, the Royal rungu.

After an 8-hours closed-door meeting which took place on Thursday night at Kapsisiywo, Chesumei Constituency in Nandi County, the rungu was handed over to William Ruto.

In 1976, The late former president Daniel Moi was handed over the same Rungu by the elders from the Talai Clan.

Among the Kalenjin, once honored with both Royal Rungu and Royal Regalia by the Talai Clan, you fully become the Kingpin and no one will challenge your authority.

After Moi’s exit from Power, Ruto was crowned as the next Kingpin with the royal regalia. The Royal Rungu can only be taken away from the custodian following his demise.

The Rungu was taken back from Moi in a ritual that took place in March, 40 days after Moi’s burial and as per traditions, it will stay with the Clan for 3 more months before being handed over to the new, legitimate Kingpin.

Just like the royal regalia, the rungu has only been given to three Kalenjin Men- Koitalel Samoei, Daniel Moi & William Samoei Ruto.

The leaders who accompanied the DP last night according to sources are Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, Chesumei MP Wilson Kogo and Soy MP Caleb Kositany.
