Meru County will hold the first-ever international mountain marathon in Africa dubbed Mt Kenya Mountain Running Championship-Meru 2020, on February 22nd.
Towards this end, Governor Kiraitu Murungi flanked by Deputy Governor Hon. Titus Ntuchiu, First Lady Madam Priscilla Murungi, top County officials and legislators, have this evening attended the Mt. Kenya Run Dinner at Meru Slopes Hotel. They were joined by various partners who have registered to be part of the historical event, at the dinner.
The event will be held at Kenya School of Adventure and Leadership (KeSAL) and the rallying call is: ‘conquering the heights’.
The main aim of the event is to raise funds to establish a Meru County Cancer Institute which was gazetted today, as well as conservation and promoting mountain tourism.
Governor Kiraitu who has already registered for the 2-kilometer race called on everyone to register to make the event successful. Meru County which through the Governor’s efforts has already employed an oncologist is currently recording up to 40 new cancer cases weekly, and the success of the establishment of the institute will go a long way to help in combating the disease.
Governor Kiraitu’s administration also aims to make Meru top tourism, sports, and mountain running regional hub. The event will henceforth be held annually.
