While Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho is well-known in Kenyan political and social circles, his elder brother is difficult to see in a crowd.
His real name is Said Abdalla Joho, although he goes by the nicknames Alpha and Abu Joho among Mombasa residents.
The billionaire is believed to be in charge of the family businesses, which include stakes in shipping, import, and export, as well as being one of Mombasa’s most powerful hoteliers.
On weekends, he is supposed to be spotted driving about Mombasa with a plain t-shirt and a pair of jeans, jogging down the roadside, or completing press-ups at Nyali Beach.
Abu has had numerous run-ins and close calls with law enforcement personnel, despite his calm attitude.
Former Coast region police chief Nelson Marwa accused him in 2018 of driving tinted automobiles and acting like a demigod in the city.
“Who is this person that you are calling Alpha? You are comparing human beings to God. The Almighty is the Alpha and Omega. People are operating as if they are demigods. We will not allow that,”Former Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa quoted.
From his parliamentary seat in Kisauni to his current gubernatorial post, Abu is claimed to have been the primary financier of Hassan Joho’s expensive political campaigns in the Coast area.
According to Tuko, Abu has strong commercial ties to the family, which is why Joho used to disrespect the president without repercussions.
Abubakar is so influential that rumors circulated that Hassan Joho had given him control of the county administration, which county officials denied.
It is claimed that Abu has been the chief financier of Joho’s extravagant political campaigns in the Coast region, ever since he ran for the Kisauni parliamentary seat all the way to his gubernatorial post.

“It is sad we elected Hassan Joho but it is Abubakar Joho who is running the county. The governor has traveled out for pilgrimage and his brothers have taken charge at the county where he is most needed. We elected Hassan Ali Joho and not his brothers. We need him in Mombasa most of the time,” Awiti mentioned.
