The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) was formed in 1950 through an act of parliament with the objective of providing a ready market for livestock farmers and providing high-quality meat and meat products to consumers.
It is a public institution and by far the oldest and the most experienced meat processor in Kenya and the larger East African region.
KMC was re-opened on 26th June 2006 after 15 years of closure with the objective of promoting the meat industry in Kenya, both domestic and for export. It was expected that with its huge capacity, it would complement government efforts in Kenya’s economic recovery.

In 1975 The Block Hotel group established Kenya Meat Processors Ltd, a slaughter and processing facility with the sole purpose of supplying hotels with reliable pork products. In 1980 Meat Processors LTD was renamed Farmer’s Choice Ltd. (FCL). Farmer’s Choice LTD then received an export license.
Farmer’s Choice was founded in 1980, with the central purpose of selling fresh and processed pork products to all income groups in Kenya. To this day, the core business of Farmer’s Choice has been the production of fresh sausages, bacon, ham, and pork.
Beef has also become an important supplementary product. In the mid-1980s, the company expanded into pig production, establishing a new butchery complex and slaughterhouse at Kahawa West just outside Nairobi.
An essential feature of this development was Total Quality Control from the beginning to the end of the production process.
Kenchic Limited is the leading producer of poultry in East and Central Africa. At its inception, the company’s main activity was the production of broiler and layer day-old chicks.

Its design and operations are certified under ISO 22000:2005 on Food Safety Management Systems and the facility is licensed for exports by the Director of Veterinary Services Choice Meats is Halal certified by both the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) and the Kenya Bureau of Halal Certification (KBHC), who closely monitor the operations.
