List of all prisons in Kenya, Location and There Classification

The thought of going to any prison is horrifying. This is enough to deter you from ever stepping on the wrong side of the road when it comes to the law.

Prisons vary in size, and the amenities offered to depend on the types of criminals they house. Below is a list of all the correctional facilities in Kenya.

Classification of prisons in Kenya

There are four main types of prisons in Kenya. They include maximum security, medium security, rehabilitation centers, and low/open custody. Here is a breakdown of the classification:

1. Maximum security prisons

Also known as high-security penitentiaries, these are the worst prisons in Kenya. They house prisoners that pose severe threats to society such as murderers, child molesters, and drug dealers.

2. Medium security prisons:

A medium-security prison is one where there are fewer restrictions on movement compared to maximum security prisons. However, some limitations still apply. Some examples of inmates housed at this level include petty thieves, burglars, and fraudsters.

3. Low/open custody prisons

These are usually used when the prisoner poses no threat to society. An open custody prison allows the inmate freedom of movement within the confines of the institution.

4. Remand centres

These are places where people accused of committing minor offenses are kept until they appear in court.

5. Rehabilitation camps

These are places set up specifically for those who have committed serious crimes or are addicted to something. Their purpose is to rehabilitate them so that they will no longer commit a crime when they return home.

We also shared an article about Kenya Police’s salary in 2021. The police are among Kenya’s most respected professionals, the reason being, the occupation comes with a high status in the community.

Many people wonder how much money the police take home every month, and this has led to different assumptions.

Like other professions, the amount of income that every Kenyan police earns relies upon their level of education and the ranks they hold in the force. normally headquartered at local police stations.
