Johnson Sakaja Biography: Birthday, Age, Birthplace, Tribe, and Nationality

Johnson Sakaja is 38 years old as of 2023. He was born on February 2nd, 1985 in Parklands, Nairobi, Kenya, in what were the then-government quarters. Sakaja is a member of the Sabaot sub-tribe of the Kenyan Kalenjin community. Every year on February 2nd, he gets to enjoy his birthday.

The Kenyan politician was born Johnson Koskei Sakaja in Nairobi County. In an interview, Sakaja revealed that his parents; Mr. John G Sakaja and the late Emily Ayoti Kubasu met in a sports event, in which his mother was participating.

In another interview at Churchill Show, Sakaja disclosed that his mother also worked as a government officer at the prison service; hence, they lived in a government house.

Things however changed after his mother died, as they were forced to vacate the government house.

“My mum used to work in government, she died in 1994. I was nine years, but we continued staying in government quarters. But in 1997, we had to move,” he said.

Although his mum died when he was nine years, Sakaja said that she remains to be her champion.

“Oh, my mum. My mum was a champion. She died very young, she was 41. At that time, she was one of the seniormost ladies in the prison service at Langata Women’s.”

While speaking to one of the media houses, Sakaja said that his father, Mr. John G Sakaja, worked as a marketing manager at Firestone Company. He also added that he was a lover of sports.

Sakaja’s mother was an athlete who won several medals in short-distance races in the 1960s and 70s. She was the first runner who won a gold medal at the East and African Championships in 1971.  

“She was Kenya’s fastest runner. In 1971, she was the East African champion in the 200m race.

“She represented Kenya in many short-distance races. She was very ambitious, and maybe that is why she died at a very young age. Very loving, I am told. I didn’t know her much by the time she died, nilikuwa mtoi bado, and I remember it very clearly, like yesterday.” Sakaja said.

Education Background

Sakaja attended the Aga Khan Nursery and Primary School. He enrolled at Lenana School in 1999 to pursue his secondary studies.

His leadership abilities became apparent throughout this period. He even rose to the position of vice chairman of the legal society and coordinator of the prefects.

After failing to acquire enough money for Harvard’s tuition, he subsequently enrolled in the University of Nairobi (UoN). Actuarial Science was his University of Nairobi degree.

He founded Arthur Johnson Consultants, a financial consulting company that is still in operation today, in his fourth year of college.

Career

At the age of 19, Sakaja received his first employment at Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) following graduation from college. However, he lost his job a year later.

He was forced by to hunt for low-paying jobs like working at his aunt’s cybercafé. He even tried his hand at music, but he failed miserably.

Political Life

Johnson Sakaja was chosen to serve as the Actuarial Students Association’s vice chair during his time in college. Soon after, he was chosen to lead the Nairobi University student organization (SONU).

He rallied young folks for the Referendum in 2005 by using his position as a SONU leader. His entry into national politics was made possible by this when he joined the Kibaki campaign in 2007 as the driver. Later, he was appointed director of the Vijana na Kibaki lobby organization.

He assumed the lead role in counting the votes in favor of the Kibaki presidential secretariat.

At the age of 26, he participated in the formation of The National Alliance (TNA), a political organization that helped president Uhuru Kenyatta win the 2012–2013 presidential elections.

The youngest leader of a major political party in the world, Sakaja took over as TNA chairman when he was just 27 years old.

Until TNA joined with 12 other parties to establish the Jubilee Party on September 9th, 2016, Sakaja served as the party’s chairman.

The TNA party, which is currently a member of the ruling jubilee coalition, then sponsored him for election to Parliament. He was elected as the designated member of the Senate.

Nairobi Governorship
