President Uhuru Kenyatta held a handshake with the ODM leader Hon Raila in March 2018. This is after a divisive election in 2017 August. The election saw Chief Justice David Maraga nullify the results. The NASA team moved to court to challenge the results which were allegedly rigged.
The Chief Justice Maraga then nullified the results terming the IEBC system of transfer having errors. The country then was to hold a re- election but days before the elections, the NASA team withdrew from the race. They cited having no trust with the IEBC.
After the election which Uhuru and Ruto won, the NASA team formed a resistance movement. This then saw the team hold a series of demonstrations. The country was then thrown into a huge rift between the jubilee supporters and the NASA supporters.
Hon Raila Odinga decided to take an oath as the people’s president. During the demonstrations, NASA supporters were heavily tackled by police who teargassed and arrested them. This series of events is what leads to the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader. This was in a bid to cool the political temperatures in the country.
The handshake then saw the president and his deputy’s relationship deteriorate. Since then the deputy president has been sidelined in many of the national events. Many people are wondering if the president Uhuru Kenyatta and Hon Raila will stay together up to the 2022 elections.
Political analysts argue that the president’s aim of holding the handshake was only to allow him to serve without any critics. Many have alleged that their relationship might come to an end just before the 2022 elections. This may be contributed by the fact that Uhuru Kenyatta may not need any position again. Since he will be going home to retirement.
