FKF’s Decision To Crown Gor Champions Inconsequential, Says KPL CEO Oguda

KPL CEO Oguda Jack has trashed Football Kenya Federation’s decision to crown Gor Mahia champions of the 2019/2020 season, insisting that KPL was the only body mandated to run the league.

“KPL and the clubs are all members of FKF, but we were given the mandate to run the league,” said KPL CEO Oguda.

Oguda said he found it quite strange that FKF would go ahead and cancel the league citing a deadline issued by Caf, yet Caf itself had not yet completed its own continental competitions (the Champions League and the Confederation Cup).

“What Caf asked for is a report on the league. Our report is very clear and we think we can conclude the league depending on the government’s directive. Even Caf themselves have not canceled their competitions,” said KPL CEO Oguda.

He said that KPL still held on to the contents of an earlier report it had issued concerning the league vis-a-vis the current situation in the country occasioned by the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus disease.

“Our report on the situation of the league still remains the same,” said KPL CEO Oguda.

KPL CEO Oguda confirmed that they had not sat down at any one time with FKF to determine the matter, terming the decision as unilateral.

“By the way, we’ve not received any communication from FKF regarding this issue.”

He added that Nick Mwendwa’s term in office had already expired and therefore he had no power to reach such a decision. The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) ruled last month that the term of the FKF’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had ended.

Given such a situation, Oguda says that it is only the Governing Council that can decide on the fate of the league.

“As for now, FKF cannot declare Gor Mahia the champions or decide teams to be relegated. That decision can only be done by the Governing Council itself because we still have the mandate to run the league. The Council will then inform the FKF Secretariat of its decision.”

KPL CEO Oguda pointed out that the federation possessed no power at all to impose a decision on KPL because there exists a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between KPL and FKF.

“When you look at that MOU, there is Joint Executive Committee (JEC) comprising of FKF president, two NEC members, KPL chairman and two KPL members supposed to address issues like this. But since the SDT declared NEC’s term is over the FKF Secretariat should wait for the KPL’s decision on the league’s status.”
