Trade and Industry Minister Peter Munya, is again on the spot after DCI sleuths raided a Milk Depo in Makutano Meru County, which is said to be the Mt. Kenya regional Distribution Center, for Lato Milk imported from Uganda under unclear circumstances.
While the owners insist Minister Munya’s docket has cleared them to set up base in Meru County by giving them all necessary documents, sources have revealed that the Center is also being used to illegally repackage the milk imported from Uganda, which is then distributed to the rest of the country. This is despite the fact that Meru County is already producing surplus milk, and the prices of the commodity are disappointing to the farmers
This comes in the wake of outrage and fury from Kenyans across the country, especially from Mt. Kenya region where commercial farming is an economic backbone of the region. They have blamed Mr. Munya for the death of the milk and entire agriculture sector, by allowing importation of cheap products including milk, eggs, coffee and tea from Uganda, Tanzania and China, which has crippled agriculture in the country.
Mr. Munya, who also had pledged to open a KCC milk plant in Kangeta, Igembe region, a promise that is yet to materialize more than two years later, has also been dogged by other scandals including the Sh10 billion poisonous cooking oil importation and release to the market, for which he is still under investigation by the DCI.
As it would appear, Mr. Munya has not had the luck of success as Minister, just like it was the case with his one term as Governor of Meru, where residents voted him out, accusing him of gross incompetence, Corruption, underperforming and failure to deliver.
