Residents of Mombasa Old Town on Friday beat up and seriously injured a police officer who was arresting people not wearing face masks.

The residents are said to have mistaken him for a civilian who was perhaps trying to solicit for bribes.

Video shot at the scene showed a gruesome sight of the officer lying motionless in a pool of blood outside a local shop. His clothes were all soaked in mud and blood

Police officers from Stapol Central visited the scene of the incident and identified the victim as Gerald Sumba, 31, a police officer attached to the Tononoka police station working at the Coast General Hospital.

He was rushed to the Coast General Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment as investigations into the matter take shape.

Police have launched a manhunt for a man said to have been with the officer during the incident.
